I have recently begun to write and record audio programme notes for EM Records as part of the label’s continuing expansion and development. These presentations provide backgrounds to some of the works featured on my recordings for the label and an extra dimension is added by the musical illustrations taken from the CDs themselves. They offer in-depth and personal interpretations of the works with which I have been so involved.

These audio notes may be heard using the embedded media player; alternatively, they may be downloaded as MP3 files, free of charge, using the links provided. Three different bitrates are offered to accommodate varying internet connection speeds; the version you hear through the media player is a high-quality (320 kbps) MP3.

In this audio programme note, the history of Gurney’s Violin Sonata in E-flat is explored and the impact of the composer’s personal circumstances on the work’s character described. Illustrated with extracts from the World Première recording, the short programme offers listeners an invaluable guide to this highly individual and emotionally intense Sonata.
