FROM EYES TO EARS: USING EDITIONS IN PERFORMANCE

A two-part seminar examining the ways in which editions are constructed and their use in the context of performance. No edition can convey the composer's intentions with completeness or with total accuracy: even those that are highly prescriptive leave some elements undescribed. Such considerations as historical context (contemporary notational methods; the view the composer may have had of his own work in a wider musical and social-historical context; the contemporary physical characteristics of the instruments for which the work was composed) as well as an awareness of the composer's working methods (the musical environment in which the composer was working; the individual notational idiosyncrasies of the composer) must therefore be brought to bear by the performer upon the edition in order to prepare an interpretation of integrity.

THE UNKNOWN IN THE KNOWN: A FRESH LOOK AT ELGAR’S SALUT D’AMOUR

Having completed in 2014 a new edition of Salut d’Amour, one of Elgar’s most popular and most-arranged works, which has been published by G. Henle Verlag, Rupert Marshall-Luck explored in this lecture the processes involved in preparing a scholarly-critical edition of a work which is well-known and well-established in the repertoire. The talk was illustrated by extracts from the work, performed live, and revealing the tone-colours that Elgar may have intended as revealed through his choice of violin fingering, which was included in the first edition.

AN UNEXPECTED GENRE: THE WORKS FOR VIOLIN AND PIANO OF C. HUBERT H. PARRY

Rupert Marshall-Luck | PRESENTER

It is easy to overlook, or at least to underestimate, the revivifying effect of Parry's work. His music was a refreshing, invigorating contrast to the reactionary environment that prevailed in British music through the first half of the nineteenth century. This new voice stemmed largely from the wider, continental European influences to which Parry was exposed as a student of Edward Dannreuther: a champion of Brahms, Liszt and Wagner, Dannreuther instituted a series of chamber music concerts at his London home, which provided both a stimulus for Parry's own important assays into the genre of chamber music and a vehicle for their first performances.

Parry's work for violin and piano ranges from the early and unpublished Freundschaftslieder of 1872 to the Suite nr 2 of 1907, and therefore provides a fascinating chart of their composer's progress from a young man, eager to hone his craft, to an established and respected musician, academic and teacher. His music for this genre expresses a wide range of emotions: they are wistful and elegiac; beautifully and memorably lyrical; exuberantly energetic; and full-bloodedly and assuredly celebratory.

This documentary film explores the works for violin and piano by C. Hubert H. Parry, shortly to be recorded by Rupert Marshall-Luck and Matthew Rickard for EM Records. Although well-known for his large-scale choral works and for his setting of Blake’s poem Jerusalem, Parry’s contributions to the genre of chamber music are less familiar to most concert-goers. Filmed in the beautiful location of Shulbrede Priory, a twelfth-century building deep in the West Sussex countryside and which was once home to Dorothea and Arthur Ponsonby, Parry’s daughter and son-in-law, the documentary also features interviews with Laura Ponsonby, Parry’s great-granddaughter, and with Em Marshall-Luck, Director of EM Records.
